Parchment bookmarks seemed like a good idea to me – what better to make a bookmark from than part of a book? – and they’re certainly popular with my friends. Carrying a quotation from a mediæval text, your name, or the phrase of your choice, these can be prepared while you wait at events, or posted out to you at home. The cost is £5 in person, £6 by post.
While there is no limit on possibility, texts could include:
“suzanne mec heht gewyrcan” (Suzanne ordered me to be made) – based on the Alfred Jewel’s “AELFRED MEC HEHT GEWYRCAN”, with your name substituted.
“wyrd bið ful aræd” (fate is fully written) – a line from The Wanderer
“vit heitir minni” (wisdom is called memory) – from an Old Norse poem
“hann hafði mikla øxi” (he had a big axe) – something many children repeat after seeing a viking reenactment, originally from Egils Saga
I am keen to develop other souvenier ideas, and am open to suggestions. If you think of anything that you might like to see here in future, e-mail me . If I decide to take it up you’ll get the first one made, at a discount.
